Vietnam rice sourcing works best when an importer defines the exact grain, broken percentage, crop year, quality tolerance, packing and destination requirements before requesting a price. “Jasmine rice” or “long grain rice” alone is not enough to compare offers from different Vietnamese suppliers.
Green Tech Agri Export works as a Vietnam-side sourcing representative for overseas buyers. We help importers prepare supplier-ready requirements, identify suitable mills or exporters, compare documentation and coordinate samples. We do not present ourselves as the producer of every rice offer.
Vietnam rice sourcing market update for importers
Vietnam exported an estimated 6.03 million tonnes of rice worth nearly US$2.91 billion during the first eight months of 2026, according to figures attributed to the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment. Volume was about 5% lower and value 10.7% lower year on year. The eight-month average export price was US$481.5 per tonne, while the July average recovered to US$511 per tonne.
These are national trade indicators, not a live supplier quotation. An actual offer depends on variety, grade, crop, packing, contract volume, loading schedule, Incoterm and destination requirements. Buyers should request offers against one controlled specification rather than use a national average as the target price.
Choose the rice type before comparing suppliers
| Rice family | Typical channel | Questions for the RFQ |
|---|---|---|
| Jasmine or fragrant rice | Retail, premium food service, ethnic distribution | Named variety, aroma expectation, crop year, broken percentage, grain length and purity |
| Long grain white rice | Wholesale, food service, institutional and tender supply | Broken percentage, milling degree, moisture, chalky kernels, foreign matter and delivery schedule |
| Broken rice | Food manufacturing, brewing, flour and price-sensitive channels | Broken profile, particle uniformity, intended use, contaminants and packing |
| Glutinous or specialty rice | Specialty retail, bakery, dessert and ethnic food | Variety identity, crop origin, amylose or cooking behavior if required, and cross-mixing control |
| Parboiled or fortified format | Institutional and nutrition programs | Process, enrichment or fortification specification, regulatory status and certificate scope |
Product names can be used differently across markets. Ask the supplier to connect the commercial name to a written technical specification and an approved sample. The buyer should define acceptance tolerances instead of assuming all mills use the same grade language.
Rice specification checklist for buyers
- Variety and origin: request the named rice variety, production region if relevant and crop year.
- Broken percentage: define the maximum broken content and how it will be measured.
- Physical quality: state grain length, moisture, damaged kernels, chalky kernels, red or yellow kernels, paddy grains and foreign matter limits.
- Food safety: align pesticide residues, heavy metals, microbiology and other contaminants with the destination market and buyer risk assessment.
- Milling and appearance: specify polished, well-milled or buyer-specific finish and use an approved reference sample.
- Packing: give bag weight, material, sewing or sealing, private-label artwork, palletization and container loading plan.
- Inspection: agree on sampling, laboratory, pre-shipment inspection, weight tolerance and dispute procedure.
International standards and destination checks
The Codex Standard for Rice CXS 198-1995 covers essential composition, quality factors, contaminants, hygiene, packaging and labeling. It includes limits for extraneous matter and references Codex maximum residue limits. It is a useful baseline, but an importer’s contract may be stricter and destination regulations still apply.
For EU buyers, pesticide maximum residue levels apply to imported food as well as EU-produced food. Buyers should check the current EU database and define a destination-specific testing plan. US-bound food projects should verify the foreign facility, prior notice, labeling and applicable importer responsibilities with the importer or compliance adviser.
Packing and shipment questions
| Decision | Buyer options | Why it changes the offer |
|---|---|---|
| Pack size | Retail bag, 5 kg, 10 kg, 25 kg, 50 kg or buyer-specific | Material, printing, labor, pallet and container utilization differ |
| Branding | Plain bag, supplier brand or private label | Artwork approval, printing MOQ and label compliance affect lead time |
| Loading | Loose bags, pallets or sling bags | Destination handling and container payload vary |
| Trade term | FOB, CFR, CIF or agreed Incoterm | Freight, insurance and responsibility must be compared consistently |
| Shipment plan | Trial container, monthly call-off or full program | Crop availability, storage and price validity change with timing |
